Interview with Simon Aston, E-Safety Officer NCC
Hi I’m Simon Aston – E-Safety Officer Northamptonshire County Council I’ve been in post for just over 2 years now.
1. What got you into safeguarding/child protection in the first place?
My previous roles, but I love it. Very challenging but also very rewarding.
2. What are the different things you do in the role?
I do lots of sessions with young people around online safety, parent sessions and sessions with teachers and practitioners as well. I also produce a monthly newsletter with lots of hints and tips about keeping yourself, children and young people safe online so look out for it.
3. What do you do enjoy most about your role?
The people I meet and the chance to be creative, I am always learning and presenting new things. The online world never stops moving.
4. What’s the hardest decision you’ve ever had to make?
Moving down to Northamptonshire 8 years ago! I didn’t really know the place that well but the job I left home for was too good to turn down at the time. I am a very homely person and struggled at first being away from my family and friends.
5. What are your aims for the next 12 months?
I want to continue raising the profile of online safety in this county.
6. Who do you rely on when things get tough?
Ah my family, the gym and my work colleagues! We are all very close and I try to see my family as often as I can. I recently became an uncle and I am totally besotted with my niece. Keeping fit is also a big part of my life. Love pushing myself and trying to classes love spinning and HIIT classes.
