Neglect highlighed at NSCB Annual Conference
Neglect was highlighted as a key priority for the NSCB at the Annual Conference on the 2nd July 2015, with an emphasis on identifying neglect and educating all to improve awareness.
A presentation on Neglect by Malcolm Ward (an independent social work/child protection consultant), raised key points around missed opportunities and a lack of clarity about whether LSCBs and Partnership Agencies had implemented lessons from research overview and professional responses to neglect.
The discussion around this provoked praticitioners and managers to think about how they prioritise neglect and think strategically around implementing good practice.
Delegates provided thoughtful feedback on the topic:
Neglect needs to be a massive target for the county – we all need to work together to improve outcomes for children.
Neglect awareness, training, tools and strategy all needed, but maybe also another element – actually looking for cases.
Practitioners should remind themselves of the following:
- Neglect Policies and Procedures - go the chapter on Neglect in the NSCB Procedures Manual.
- The Neglect Assessment Tool - download the Neglect PDF tool.
- Training on Neglect - go the Barnardo's NSCB training website.
- NSPCC guidance - go to the NSPCC webpage about neglect.
